A Day in the Life of a Peace Valley Poultry Intern

One of his many adventures, Peace Valley Poultry Intern, David Setzer, holds a black snake.

David Setzer is our intern for the 2023 growing season. He hails from the Denver, Colorado area and is adapting to our heat and humidity much better than I expected. Most days David helps me in the routine of feeding , watering, and moving chickens. He also helps monitor pasture growth and rotate cattle to fresh grass.

Last Saturday, when we were starting to feed and water the chicks in a brooder, I tried to open an overhead garage-type door. After several failed attempts, David exclaimed, “Oh, There’s a snake!” To our surprise, there was a 4+ foot black snake coiled around the garage door track. David quickly volunteered for snake removal duty. We relocated the black snake to the far western part of our farm.

Now if I could just convince David that removing skunks is as exciting as removing snakes.
